15,000 images of Persian manuscripts online

Asian and African Studies have just uploaded more than 15,000 images of Persian manuscripts online.
This is the result of 2 years' work in an ongoing project sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation together with the Bahari Foundation, the Barakat Trust, the Friends of the British Library, the Soudavar Memorial Foundation and the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute.

The manuscripts were selected for their historical, literary and artistic importance and form part of a three year project to provide digital records of our Persian manuscript collection and images of 50 manuscripts. We have created a dedicated project page which gives details of all the digitized manuscripts together with links to their images and supporting documentation. This is located at Digital Access to Persian Manuscripts (http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/asian-and-african/persian.html) but can also be easily found by clicking on the ‘Persian’ tab at the top of this page (http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/asian-and-african/persian.html).

The British Library has exciting news for researchers of Persian manuscripts. The previously unpublished descriptions for a projected third volume of the Catalogue of the India Office Library's Persian manuscript collection have been digitised and made available on the British Library's Digitised Manuscripts website. The catalogue was already well under way in the 1930s but with the intervention of the 2nd World War, the project was never completed. It contains, however, descriptions of about 1,500 works and it is our sincere hope that by making them available, this part of the British Library’s collection will become more accessible to researchers interested in the literature, history and culture of the Persianate world. The digitisation of this important catalogue has been made possible by a grant from the Barakat Trust.
